Like pregnancy massage, sports massage incorporates many different techniques. They are generally deeper techniques that are considered to be more specific in that they address one specific part of the body. Examples of techniques used are myofascial release and triggerpoint therapy. This type of massage is most often used to address a specific injury.
Some athletes also benefit from pre and post-event sports massage. In a pre-event massage, therapists use stimulating techniques to help animate athletes prior to their event and get their circulation and blood flowing well. In a post-event massage, therapists will use techniques to help loosen muscles before they become too stiff and aid in the prevention of delayed onset muscle soreness.
